DIAS DE LOS MUERTOS
I've been trying to make art for one of my favorite holidays, Day of the Dead or Dia de los Muertos. It just doesn't seem to be working out. I wanted to try and make masks that people can wear so I bought a plastic skeleton mask to use as a mold. It looks like it would be easy but every time I try to make one something goes wrong. I got a few foam skulls to decorate and now everyone wants to decorate one. I am glad it has become something enjoyable for my friends however, I think I might toss out the idea of selling it as art.
I think sticking to my abstracts and the occasional commission work is what is good for me.

art as gifts
A good friend of mine celebrated his 40th birthday yesterday so I gave him a painting of mine. I think giving paintings as gifts is a great thing if the person will appreciate it. I know that he will and so that is why I feel really good about it. There is something fantastic about giving away your art to someone you know will love it just as much as you, the artist does. The one I gave him is really the first painting that I have developed my "moving character" motif in.

taking on a new direction
i haven't had the time to work on any art until recently. i moved into a new apartment and i feel i now have a different mindset about my art. i've been looking a lot of max ernst and arshile gorky and realized that my work lacks depth. i've been working on a painting for about a week now and i think it is a vastly unique from any work i have ever done. not sure if this is because of a new location but it sure is making me feel like i've accomplisheds something.
pictures to come when i get internet access!

fine art book report
amazing new idea i have, or have had for a long time now.. paintings based off books. and i am actually going for it. i think i would like to stick with this idea for a while. it's nice to do paintings that don't have any special meaning.. it was amazing. but now i feel like my paintings need to have some substance. so, why not paint what i am absolutely obsessed with : books. i am hoping this inspires others to pick up these books to read. i am tired of people reading books as an escape. or people not even reading at all but instead watching television for countless hours a night. or reading books because they were featured on oprah/the today show/your local news.. the books i read might be seen as obscure or experimental. but why be afraid of such a genre? i try to be open to everything. i'd like to inspire others to do the same.

contemporary art
I've been researching new artists to look at. I feel like I need this to figure out what I want to do with my art. I feel like right now, it's not edgy or different enough.
I found artist Matthew Ritchie and was immediately inspired.

Giving In
the economy and being at the lower end of it is making me think about my art and what i want to do. however, what i want to do isn't really helping me. i am thinking about doing little bird/animal drawings to sell at craft shows to make money. a friend of mine makes a living off of it. but, at the same time i don't want to be known as "that artist who does the bird drawings". it doesn't interest me to be that artist. my style is abstract and contemporary. it's a tough choice to make but i think during these art times, i have to give in.

The New Year
So I've been thinking about last year and what I had accomplished, which actually for me is quite a bit. I think this year though, I would like to step it up a notch or two.
I am going to involve myself is art far more than I ever have by:
-entering more contests, portfolio reviews, exhibitions, publication opportunities.
-painting and creating art more
-keeping my website up to date and blogging more
-promoting my art
-getting more artists to show at my gallery and meeting new people
-trying new things
It will be a good year.
I am also in the process of writing my first fiction novel. I figured out that I wanted to do this about a week ago. I had always wanted to write a fiction novel but never had the time or energy to think about it. When I am not creating art, I write poetry and essays and have been published in various literary magazines. I think writing a novel will be a big step into something completely wonderful. It's very exciting. I will be posting updates!

Third Friday Game Night at Painted Desert Gallery
To start the year out with something different, we came up with an idea for the gallery. Third Fridays in Lancaster are typically for live music. We decided that since we all like playing games and I have had numerous game nights at my home in the past that we should have something like that take place at the gallery.
We will have our first Third Friday Game Night on Friday, January 15th from 6 to 10. Again, Painted Desert Gallery is located at 227 North Duke Street in Lancaster City. There will be plenty of games to play, food and drink and I am trying to find musical entertainment. Even if you don't like to play games, come to hang out!
It should be a great time so hope to see you there!
